How to Turn on Your Utilities in San Antonio

One of the most important parts of finding and moving into a new home is determining what is required to turn on the utilities. In a city of San Antonio’s size, moving from one neighborhood to another can require a change in utility companies. When options are available, you might want to talk with neighbors to determine which companies have the best service in your area. Here’s the inside scoop from our San Antonio moving companies:

Water and Sewer

The San Antonio Water System (SAWS) is the water and sewer provider throughout San Antonio. The water is sourced mostly from the Edwards Aquifer that sits under the city. In recent years, planners have diversified sources to preserve the aquifer and provide insurance against drought conditions.

Starting new service requires a call to customer service or a visit to one of their offices. In addition to a deposit, which varies, you will need to provide specific information including:

  • The address of the property.
  • Lease agreement or proof of ownership
  • Government issued ID
  • Contact Information

Gas and Electric

CPS Energy provides the electric service for San Antonio. This company generates energy through a mixture of coal, nuclear, wind, solar, natural gas, and landfill gas sources. They also provide natural gas to residents throughout the city.

To begin service, you can complete the online form, visit an area office, or call to speak to a customer service representative. For completion of the application, you will need:

  • Government issued ID
  • Lease agreement or proof of ownership

A deposit may be required if you do not have current service to move. You may qualify for deposit deferral or zero deposit depending on your credit history or utility payment history.

Garbage

In most areas of San Antonio, the city’s solid waste management provides garbage service. You will pay a monthly fee for the weekly service. They offer a Pay as You Throw program that charges a different amount based on the size of trash container you choose. There are three options from a 48-gallon bin to a 96-gallon bin. To get started, you will need to contact the Solid Waste Department or call 3-1-1.

Internet and Cable

Several internet and cable companies serve San Antonio. Many of the providers offer internet, cable, and telephone bundles that can cost less than buying the service individually. AT&T and Spectrum cover most of San Antonio. Each will install with a call to customer service. A deposit may be necessary but is usually collected on installation day.

Both internet and cable come with many options. Before deciding on a provider, you may want to figure out what you need in your new home. If you start from there, you should be able to get the best deal with any add-ons you might want. Once you have your basic requirements in mind, look at the AT&T and Spectrum websites for the options that fit your needs and lifestyle.
