Six Useful Tips When Packing Your Kitchen to Move

You can pack your kitchen with ease when you are ready. Gather up your boxes, packing paper, and bubble wrap. Then read these great tips from professional movers to help you prepare for a smooth move!

1. Must-Haves Box

This box will contain everything you need first. Be sure to include some cleaners and paper towels so you can do a quick clean. If you would like to cook your first meal in your new home, then you will need some pots or pans, dishes, and utensils. If you would like to order food after a long day of moving, then you will want to pack paper plates, cups, and napkins. Include some bottles of water or other drinks. Most importantly, label this box well and pack it in your vehicle with you.

2. Food

Throw out any expired food first. If you have a short-distance move, you may wish to pack up all of your food. If you have a long-distance move, you may wish to donate non-perishable items. Do not pack any open items unless they have an air-tight lid. Keep all perishable items in coolers, and replenish the ice as needed.

3. Dishes and Glassware

When packing dishes, you should begin by taping the bottom of each box securely with extra tape. Wrap each dish in paper or bubble wrap. Tuck packing paper, bubble wrap or dish towels around any extra space in the box. You should also wrap glassware individually and place it in a divided box, if available.

4. Silverware

If you have silverware trays that sit inside of the drawers, you can wrap them in plastic wrap several times so they can then be unwrapped and placed back in a drawer in your new home. Secure loose silverware with rubber bands and wrap them in paper or bubble wrap. Wrap knives individually for safety purposes. You can wrap a small washcloth around the knife before the paper or bubble wrap. Label the box clearly, so people are aware that it contains sharp objects.

5. Pots, Pans and Baking Dishes

You can set most of your pots and pans inside each other. Place a layer of paper in between to prevent scratching. If you have extra space inside of them, consider packing some extra kitchen items inside. You could pack spices, small pantry items or extra sponges in this space. Your glass baking dishes require some more care. Be sure to wrap them in multiple layers of paper or bubble wrap and secure the bottom of the box with extra tape.

6. Appliances

You may have some small appliances, such as a bowl mixer, that have extra parts. Be sure to remove any loose parts before packing. Keep all parts together in one box. Add paper or bubble wrap to fill in any gaps. If you are moving large appliances, be sure to wrap blankets around them to keep them from getting scratched. Most moving companies provide these.

You can pack your kitchen with ease when you prepare with the right packing materials. Consider using your phone to take pictures of the items that are in each box before you secure it. You will be able to locate items easily this way and unpack your kitchen with ease.
